Safety Rules when Grooming your Horse

Share |

For the last month or so, we have been concentrating on tips to groom, bathe and care for your horse easier and more economically.

Before we close out our Equine Grooming Sale this year, we want to remind our visitors to “Be Safe while Grooming”

Although grooming should be a relaxing activity for both you AND your horse, you want to make sure that you stay completely alert and not get too comfortable during grooming sessions.

Remember these safety tips when you are grooming your horse (and in general when you are around your horse or horses).

  • Never duck under your horse’s neck or belly. If you are trying to get to the other side of the horse, walk around him or her.
  • Never stand directly behind your horse when grooming him. Always stand off to the side in case he decides to kick.
  • On the flip side, never stand directly in front of your horse’s legs when grooming him or her. Stay to the side of the legs just in case he decides to move forward quickly or strikes out in any way.
  • Never groom your horse when he is loose in a stall or pasture. Make sure that the horse is correctly secured before you even start to groom him.
  • Never assume that a horse you do not know is going to be “okay” with grooming. When grooming a new horse or a horse that you do not know well, use extreme caution. Be especially cautious when brushing the flanks or underbelly.
