Look out Boys- There’s a Filly in the Preakness Field

In just over 24 hours, we will know if Rachel Alexandra, filly extraordinare, will be the winner of the 2009 Preakness Stakes. After running and winning an impressive Kentucky Oaks 2 weeks ago, Rachel Alexandra is one of few fillies who have found herself in a field against the “Big Boys”
at the Preakness. As of now, the odds are in her favor. If she were to win, Jockey Calvin Borel, could be considered something short of a miracleworker. Calvin Borel rode Rachel Alexandra and won the Kentucky Oaks at Churchill Downs on Friday, May 1. the next day, he saddled up on longshot Mine That Bird, and proceeded to make his way through a field of Derby horses, who didn’t even consider that that Bird could possibly be a worthy opponent. Borel went on to take Mine That Bird inside along the rail, for a stunning and impressive win of the 2009 Kentucky Derby. That way the day after he won the Oaks.
So, tomorrow Borel will saddle up the not so little lady, Rachel Alexandra, and try to become one of the only jockeys to win an Oaks, Derby and Preakness in 2 consecutive races. Question is, will the fabulous filly take her 13 post position, and come out ahead of the colts. Well, I think it may not be a problem. But then again, I know next to nothing about horse racing and fillies racing against colts. My only experience with thoroughbreds has been to meet with racehorse owner Jennifer Tilley and her filly Time Doesn’t Wait.
Jennifer’s horse has an impressive track record at Turfway Park, and her trainer, Caroline Murphy is one of the most highly regarded women trainers at the track. According to both horsewomen, horse racing is changing, and the “Sport of Kings” is slowing letting the Queens enter the field.
After watching Time Doesn’t Wait perform at Turfway, I have to say that seeing any thoroughbred perform is a golden opportunity. Hopefully Jennifer’s horse, or horse’s (as she is waiting for a baby to be born), will have an opportunity to race in a Stakes race, but in the meantime, Shane’s Tack salutes Rachel Alexandra, and all the other beautiful horses who will take their place at the starting gate on Saturday, May 16. Good luck to you all. May the best man …………………..ahem….Woman…………….win…… And Their Off………..
