Cleaning your horse’s private parts is not a fun task, but it is necessary for the health of your horse. This area should be washed on a regular basis to keep things in good shape and functioning properly. Whether your horse is a mare or a gelding, always make sure that your horse will not react violently when cleaning the private area. 1. Depending on the personality of your horse, you may want give your horse a sedative to make him more cooperative during the washing.
2. Have all of your cleaning, rinsing and drying supplies handy in a grooming tote that is within easy reach and make sure that your horse is secure.
3. Always use a gentle soap made for washing this area. A mild soap that is great to use in this area is Equine America Sheath Cleaner. This soap works great for both mares and geldings.
4. It is a good idea to have a pair of gloves on when cleaning the private parts. Latex or thin rubber disposable gloves work best when working on this task.
5. When cleaning a mare�s teat area, use warm water to get the area wet and gently massage into the skin to remove wax build-up. After the wax is removed, rinse the area until the soap is gone with cool water.
6. When cleaning a gelding�s private area, the secretions known as the bean need to be removed. The bean forms in the pocket at the end of the penis. This area must be cleaned at least once a year or more if there is build-up. If the area is not cleaned, then your horse may have irritation and swelling. Make sure the area have been made wet with warm water and apply the soap. Rinse away the soap with cool water and make sure that there is no soap residue to cause irritation.
7. Don’t be discouraged if the bath doesn’t go well or your horse becomes uncooperative. You may need to leave this task to veterinarian or other professional.
