A Clean Coat for your Horse

Share |

In our society, many people spend excessive time and money making sure their hair looks fabulous. The reason behind such behavior: simply, to look good. Your horse’s hair, however, is a different story. The benefits from a clean coat serve to keep your horse comfortable and healthy.

Take the time to stroke your horse’s coat to find cuts and skin problems you would not have otherwise noticed. Hose down or just wipe your horse with a damp cloth after riding to ensure that dirt will be washed off. Cleaning out the dirt is paramount to your horse, as grime becomes extremely irritating when your horse becomes sweaty from exercise.

Washing your horse with shampoos should be done regularly, but not too often; twice a month is sufficient. Many shampoos are moisturizing and conditioning, diminishing the need for a conditioner. Vetrolin Bath Horse Shampoo is a product that both shampoos, conditions, and protects the skin and coat from harmful U.V. rays. (Almost makes you want to use it yourself!)

Do not forget the main and tail! These areas get tangled and also must be cleaned. Although I prefer spray detanglers because they are easier to use, gel detanglers work well also.

Keep your horse’s coat in tip-top shape as you would your own hair. Trust me, your horse will appreciate it.
