Sizing Old Mac's Hoof Boots

It is important to double check your horse's hoof measurements before ordering to ensure a good secure fit. Should you have any doubts please refer to the size selection information provided.

Prior to measuring it is very important that your horse's hooves have been recently trimmed.

If you intend to wear Old Mac's over metal shoes for transport then you must take your measurement after shoeing.

The unique design features of Old Mac's allows for width and length adjustment to suit most individual horse's hooves and also caters for natural hoof growth between trimming. This means Old Mac's Boots actually fit to the hoof rather than relying on the hoof fitting to the boot.

How to measure

1. Measure the length.
The length measurement is from the buttress's of the heel to the toe. The buttress's of the heel is the last part of the hoof wall contacting the ground at the rear of the hoof that touches the ground when a horse is standing on a flat surface . It is at this point the hoof leaves the ground and deviates upwards to the bulbs. DO NOT INCLUDE THE BULBS IN THE MEASUREMENT.
For an accurate measurement, place a straightedge across both heel buttress. Then from the middle of this straightedge measure to the end of the toe. See diagram. Record the length measurement on the Old Mac's size chart.

2. Measure the width
Measure across the widest part of the hoof. Record the width on the Old Mac's size chart.

3. Select size from chart
Now that you have both measurements the Old Mac's size chart which will indicate your correct boot size. Select the largest size indicated by the size chart. The smaller of the two sizes on the chart is discarded.

See examples below.

Select the size of your largest hoof.
If your horse has a club foot or has one hoof distinctly bigger than the other, or your horse has severe heel contraction, then we have inserts available to aid fit on the smallest hoof. Inserts should only be used if you cannot stop the correct size boot turning on the hoof after you have done the wiggle test. It is unnecessary to order inserts with new boots as it is unlikely you will need them if you have the correct size boot. Only 1 or 2 % of horses need inserts. Many users with hooves longer than wider have mistakenly believed that because Old Macs soles are shaped wider than longer, they need inserts to get a good fit. The shape of the sole of the boot is irrelevant. It is the upper which does ALL the securing. The sole only provides a shock absorbing platform for the hoof to sit on. The extra width of the sole allows room for growth between trims as well as accommodating wide hooves.

 Example 1 below.
If you have circled size 5 for length and size 2 for width,
size 5 is the correct size and an ideal fit.

How do Old Mac's Work?
The securing features of the boots are:

  • The pastern strap. This wraps around the pastern and prevents the boot coming off. This strap performs the same as watch band around your wrist. Pull up firmly but not too tight. It is important that after securing this strap you can comfortably slip a finger between the pastern and the strap at the sides of the pastern bone. Pulling this strap too tight is unnecessary and can lead to chafing.

  • The soft leather rear of the boot is responsible for securing the boot, stopping the boot from turning on the hoof. The bulbs of the hoof fill up this section of the boot and basically mould into it. This means the hoof is secured front to back, NOT side to side as with other products.

  • This is why if your hoof is 3 or 4 sizes longer than wider on the size chart, the fit is NOT affected, the boot will still fit securely and correctly. Approx. 80% of horses hooves are longer than they are wider and the length of the hoof will determine the correct size boot. The design of Old Mac's ensures this does not affect the fit. Correctly sized Old Mac's will not come off. If a boot does come off it is generally because the boots are too small. Wearing a size too small results in the strap sitting in the incorrect position, out on the ends of the bulbs rather than over them.
